The Detroit Lions have begun discussing an extension with Matthew Stafford.

"Matthew Stafford is our quarterback, and we hope is our quarterback for a long time," Lewand said, via MLive.com. "The reason to explore a contract extension with Matthew is to fulfill that goal of having him be our quarterback for a long time. It's not a short-term look at the salary cap.

"That's the wrong way to look at that. When you look at extending somebody like Matthew, he's not going to take less money to extend. That's a very short-term focus to look at."

Stafford will earn $12 million in 2013, but his cap hit is at $20.3 million.

The San Francisco 49ers are not interested in pursuing a trade for Darrelle Revis at this time, according to source.

The New York Jets are contemplating a trade of Revis this offseason.

Revis will require a new deal by next offseason.

The 49ers' trade of Alex Smith to the Chiefs this week put them in prime position to make a major secondary trade.

The Oakland Raiders are interested in selecting Geno Smith with the third overall pick, according to sources.

The Raiders already have Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor on their roster.

The report could be a smokescreen to trade down.

The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contract of DeMarcus Ware.

The Cowboys converted $5 million of Ware's base salary into a signing bonus to save $4 million against the cap.

The Cowboys intend to restructure the contracts of approximately 12 more players by Mar. 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade for Alex Smith with the San Francisco 49ers.

The deal cannot become official until Mar. 12.

The 49ers will get a No. 2 pick in this year's draft and a similar pick in 2014, according to a source that spoke with Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News.

Smith lost his job as starting quarterback of the 49ers to Colin Kaepernick following a concussion. Kaepernick quickly ended the controversy with several signature performances and eventually led the 49ers to an appearance in the Super Bowl.

With this bold trade, Andy Reid is clearly gambling his success with the Chiefs on the performance of Smith.

The Browns, Cardinals and Jaguars were the other teams believed to be interested in trading for Smith.

Jeff Demps will return to track and field, less than one year after participating in the Olympics.

Demps signed with New England last Aug. 17 and began practicing with the team during its joint training camp practices with the Buccaneers. 

Demps was a running back and return specialist while at Florida.

The Oakland Raiders are in discussions with Mike Holmgren about taking a prominent leadership role within the organization.

Reggie McKenzie is the current general manager of the Raiders.

Holmgren most recently had an advisory role with the Cleveland Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly exploring a trade for Alex Smith.

Jason LaCanfora of CBS reported this week the 49ers have told others that a deal for Smith is “effectively complete.”  

The Chiefs, Browns and Jaguars are also believed to be interested in Smith.

It is unknown if the 49ers would trade Smith within their division.

Matthew Stafford has the largest cap number in the NFL at $20.82 million.

Stafford takes up 17.1 percent of the Lions' cap assuming it is $122 million.

Tom Brady previously had the highest cap number before his restructured deal.
